Innovative drives and yacht types: Solar, hydrogenerators, gliders and displacers

Yacht owners want independence and emission-free sailing wherever possible. This is driving technical change in yacht building - from solar systems and hybrid drives to specialised hull shapes for speed or long distances. For shipyards and boat builders, this means growing technical diversity and an increasing need for skilled labour.

Energy supply on sailing yachts: The alternatives to diesel generators

Ideally, sailing yacht owners do not want to use fossil fuels for their energy supply. Three technologies dominate the market - with different strengths and weaknesses:

Solar cells
Placement on saloon and cockpit roof. Noiseless, no loss of speed, high performance in sunshine.

Hydrogenerator
Propeller in the water current generates electricity - around the clock during the journey, even when the sky is cloudy.

Electric motor as hydrogenerator
The drive motor also serves as a generator when sailing. Higher efficiency, continuous operation.

Wind generator
Formerly widespread, now less common - generates vibrations and noise, often too slow in high winds.

The state-of-the-art concept combines large solar panels with an electric motor as the main drive: during the day, the panels supply the motor directly, while the battery bank takes over at night. The electric motor acts as a hydrogenerator while sailing and continuously charges the battery. The result: a ship that can be operated completely fuel-free.

Motor yachts: More energy, more space, more technology

Motor yachts are fully motorised. This enables more energy capacity, larger water tanks, more storage space - and significantly more comfort than a sailing yacht of the same size. Many hobby boaters start with the cheaper sailing yacht and later switch to a motor yacht. There are two fundamentally different hull concepts within motor yachts.

Planing hull - fast and manoeuvrable

Fast yachts up to around 25 metres use planing hulls: from a certain speed, the hull lifts out of the water and glides over the surface instead of through it. Water offers far more resistance than air - gliding over it saves an enormous amount of propulsion energy for the speed reached. Typical cruising speeds are between 28 and 35 knots, with high-performance models reaching up to 48 knots.

The price for speed: limited range, low tank capacity, lower seaworthiness. Planing hull yachts are designed for coastal waters - quick trips, a few days, then back to the home harbour.

Displacement hull - stable and far-reaching

Displacers lie deep and stable in the water - they never rise above the surface. This makes them slower, but also much more seaworthy, spacious and longer-range. There are displacement boats (so-called trawlers) from as little as 9 metres, which are designed for long-distance trips.

Large displacement and explorer yachts offer space for whirlpools, swimming pools, helicopter landing decks, several tender boats with crane systems and extensive technical rooms. Many have ice-strengthened hulls for expeditions in rough waters. These yachts are self-contained platforms for voyages lasting weeks or months.

What this means for yacht building

The growing technical diversity - solar systems, hybrid drives, battery banks, specialised hull shapes, luxury equipment - significantly increases the demands on skilled workers in yacht building. Traditional shipbuilders and carpenters are in demand, as are electricians with knowledge of modern energy systems and mechanics for highly developed drive systems.

German and European shipyards are increasingly turning to qualified personnel from Eastern Europe to meet this demand.

Which skilled workers are needed?

Electrician & Electrical Technician
Solar systems, battery banks, hybrid drives, vehicle electrical systems, navigation and control electronics

Request yacht building personnel from Eastern Europe

Are you looking for qualified specialists for your yacht shipyard - whether for sailing yachts, motor yachts or special constructions? We provide experienced personnel from Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and other EU countries - quickly, legally compliant and with the right qualifications.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any Eastern European electricians with experience in solar systems and battery systems on yachts?

Yes, the demand for skilled labour with knowledge of maritime energy systems is also growing in Eastern Europe. We can search specifically for electricians with relevant yacht or boat experience and provide proof of qualifications in advance.

Can skilled workers from Eastern Europe also work on large motor yachts and explorer yachts?

Yes, many of the specialists we place have experience with larger yachts and superyachts - including interior fitters, electricians and metalworkers. For projects with special requirements, we check qualifications and references in advance.

What is the legal procedure for seconded EU staff?

Full freedom of movement for workers applies to EU citizens. We apply for A1 certificates, ensure AÜG compliance and take care of minimum wage reporting to customs - completely and without any effort on your part.

How quickly is staff available?

Usually within 1-3 weeks. In the case of seasonal projects or planned shipyard lay times, we recommend early enquiry to speed up the process.

Do you also act as an agent for individual project phases - e.g. only for the electrical fit-out or the interior fit-out?

Yes, we provide targeted services for specific project phases, individual trades or seasonal order peaks - without long-term commitments.
