Larger boats separate these functions: One or two diesel engines drive the ship via shafts and propellers, while separate diesel generators supply the on-board power supply system with electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explorer and displacement yachts have an important additional principle: instead of relying on high engine power, the designers optimise for range. Two comparatively small diesel engines under 1,000 hp run continuously in the partial load range - far away from their load limits, with a correspondingly long service life and low consumption. Large fuel tanks do the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following applies to power generation: Larger yachts with several generators often use a powerful daytime generator and a smaller, quieter night-time generator - so both run predominantly at their optimum output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-welche-formen-des-antriebs-gibt-es\">What forms of drive are there?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The classic system has clear disadvantages: When travelling, at least three machines run simultaneously - two drive motors and a generator. In addition, diesel generators do not always operate in the optimum load range. The industry's answer: two innovation packages that build on each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Night package<\/strong><br>A dimensioned battery bank takes care of all night-time consumption - including air conditioning. No generator, no noise, no vibrations. The diesels charge the battery during the day and are switched off completely at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Explorer package<\/strong><br>The drive motors are no longer directly coupled to the shafts. Instead, the diesel engines only generate electricity - electric motors on the shafts take over the propulsion. At low speeds, a single diesel is sufficient for both shafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hybrid drive<\/strong><br>A common platform simultaneously supplies the electric motors, on-board power supply and battery bank. A single diesel can do everything at medium speed and still charge the battery. Several generators can be switched on or off depending on the power requirement - always at the optimum level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fully electric<\/strong><br>All consumers - propulsion, air conditioning, galley, lights - are powered by batteries. Three to four generators charge the batteries and supply the ship directly when the load is high. Entering and leaving the harbour is purely electric and emission-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-was-leisten-diese-systeme\">What do these systems do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The progress from classic diesel to integrated hybrid systems brings concrete advantages on several levels: more comfort thanks to low-noise and low-vibration night phases, greater range thanks to optimised generator operation, lower fuel consumption and therefore lower emissions, as well as a longer service life for the machines thanks to more even utilisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes these systems attractive not only for luxury yachts - explorer and expedition yachts benefit in particular because they are designed for weeks of autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-was-bedeutet-das-fur-werften-und-fachkrafte\">What does this mean for shipyards and skilled workers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The integration of hybrid drives, battery banks, multiple generators and electric motors places high demands on assembly and commissioning. Traditional diesel mechanics alone are no longer enough - skilled workers who can combine electrical engineering, power electronics and maritime drive systems are in demand.
